Medicine information
Uses & overview
Trimetazidine is a prescription medicine used as an add-on treatment for adults with chronic stable angina when first-line antianginal medicines are insufficient or not tolerated. Chronic stable angina causes chest discomfort when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood, often during physical activity or emotional stress. Unlike some other angina medicines, Trimetazidine does not primarily work by lowering blood pressure or slowing the heart rate. Instead, it helps heart cells use energy more efficiently under conditions of reduced oxygen supply. This may help reduce the frequency of angina symptoms in appropriately selected patients. Trimetazidine is intended for long-term symptom management and is not a treatment for a sudden angina attack or heart attack. Patients should continue following their doctor's treatment plan and seek emergency medical care for sudden, severe, or worsening chest pain.
How to use
Follow the prescribed dosage: Use only the strength and dose recommended by your healthcare professional. Immediate-release and modified-release tablets may have different dosing schedules. Check the formulation: Trimetazidine is available in different formulations, including modified-release tablets. Read the product leaflet carefully and ask your pharmacist if you are unsure which formulation you have. Take it at the recommended time: Follow your prescription regarding how often to take each dose. Some formulations are taken with meals, so follow the instructions for your specific product. Swallow tablets correctly: Swallow modified-release tablets whole with water unless the product leaflet specifically permits another method. Do not crush or chew them. Manage missed doses carefully: If you forget a dose, follow the patient leaflet or ask your pharmacist for advice. Do not double the next dose. Monitor your symptoms: Keep track of angina episodes and inform your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment. Report movement problems: Contact your doctor if you develop tremors, stiffness, slow movements, balance difficulties, or an unsteady walk. Treatment may need to be stopped under medical guidance.
