Medicine information
Uses & overview
Topiramate is a prescription medicine classified as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug. It is commonly prescribed to manage certain types of epilepsy and to prevent migraine headaches in eligible adults and, where approved, children. Topiramate works through several mechanisms that influence electrical activity in the brain, helping reduce seizure occurrence and the frequency of migraine attacks. For migraine prevention, Topiramate is taken regularly as prescribed. It does not provide immediate relief from a migraine attack that is already underway. The dose and duration of treatment depend on the patient's diagnosis, age, kidney function, medical history, and response to therapy.
How to use
Follow Your Doctor's Prescription: Take Topiramate at the prescribed dose. Treatment often begins with a low dose that is gradually increased to reduce side effects. Maintain a Regular Schedule: Take each dose at the recommended time. Consistent use is important for seizure management and migraine prevention. Take with Water: Swallow tablets or capsules according to the instructions provided with your specific formulation. Do not crush or alter the medicine unless your pharmacist confirms it is appropriate. Follow Food Instructions: Topiramate can generally be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on your product packaging. Missed Dose: Follow your patient leaflet or ask your pharmacist what to do. Do not double the next dose. If multiple doses have been missed, contact your healthcare professional before restarting.
