Medicine information
Uses & overview
Sirolimus is an immunosuppressant medicine that helps control the body's immune response. It is primarily used to prevent organ rejection in selected kidney transplant recipients, usually as part of a specialist-directed treatment plan that may include other medicines. Sirolimus belongs to a class of medicines known as mTOR inhibitors. It works by interfering with specific signals involved in immune cell activation and growth, helping reduce the immune response against a transplanted organ. Depending on the formulation and approved indication, sirolimus may also be used for certain other conditions, including lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Its use must be determined by a qualified healthcare professional based on the patient's diagnosis and medical history.
How to use
Follow the prescribed dose: Take sirolimus exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not adjust the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Maintain a consistent schedule: Take the medicine at the same time each day to support consistent drug levels in the body. Follow food instructions: Take each dose consistently in relation to meals, following the product leaflet and your doctor's instructions. Check the formulation: Sirolimus may be available as tablets or an oral solution. Use the measuring device supplied or recommended for liquid formulations. Avoid grapefruit: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can affect sirolimus levels. Avoid them unless your healthcare professional specifically advises otherwise. Attend monitoring appointments: Your doctor may request blood tests to check sirolimus concentrations, blood cell counts, cholesterol, and kidney function. Ask about missed doses: Follow your medication leaflet or contact your pharmacist for advice. Do not double the next dose. Report signs of infection: Contact your doctor promptly if you develop fever, persistent cough, or other signs of infection. Check other medicines: Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products because sirolimus has important drug interactions.
