Medicine information
Uses & overview
Lopinavir & Ritonavir is a prescription antiretroviral combination used to manage human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Both ingredients belong to the protease inhibitor class of medicines. Lopinavir blocks HIV protease, an enzyme required for the virus to produce mature infectious particles. Ritonavir primarily helps increase lopinavir levels in the body by slowing its breakdown, supporting its antiviral activity. This combination is used alongside other antiretroviral medicines as part of a comprehensive HIV treatment plan. It helps control viral replication and can support immune system health when taken consistently as prescribed. It does not cure HIV, and ongoing treatment and medical monitoring remain important.
How to use
Follow the prescribed dose: Take the medicine exactly as directed by your healthcare professional. Do not adjust the dose or stop treatment on your own. Maintain a regular schedule: Take each dose at the recommended times every day. Consistent use helps maintain effective medicine levels and reduces the risk of treatment failure. Follow food instructions: Tablets and oral solution may have different administration requirements. Check the product leaflet or ask your pharmacist whether your formulation should be taken with food. Swallow tablets as directed: Do not crush, split, or chew tablets unless your healthcare professional confirms that this is appropriate for your specific product. Handle missed doses carefully: If you miss a dose, follow the patient leaflet or contact your pharmacist. Do not double the next dose to compensate. Check for drug interactions: Inform your doctor about all prescription medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use because this combination has many clinically important interactions. Attend follow-up appointments: Your healthcare professional may monitor viral load, liver function, cholesterol, and blood sugar during treatment.
