Medicine information
Uses & overview
Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker belonging to the dihydropyridine class of medicines. It is commonly prescribed to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) and certain types of angina, which causes chest pain due to reduced blood supply to the heart muscle. Nifedipine works by relaxing and widening blood vessels, helping improve circulation, lower blood pressure, and reduce the heart's workload. Different formulations are available, including immediate-release and extended-release tablets. These formulations are not interchangeable without medical guidance because they release the medicine differently. Extended-release formulations are often used for ongoing blood pressure management, while the choice of treatment depends on the patient's condition and the prescriber's recommendation.
How to use
Follow the prescribed dosage: Take Nifedipine in the amount and at the frequency recommended by your healthcare professional. Never change your dose without medical advice. Check the formulation: Nifedipine is available in immediate-release and extended-release formulations. Follow the instructions for your specific product, as the administration requirements may differ. Take it consistently: Take your medicine at the recommended time each day to maintain a regular treatment routine. Swallow extended-release tablets whole: Do not crush, chew, or split extended-release tablets unless the product instructions specifically permit it. Altering the tablet may affect how the medicine is released. Follow food instructions: Some formulations have specific food-related instructions. Read the package leaflet and ask your pharmacist if you are uncertain. Manage missed doses carefully: Follow the patient leaflet or ask your pharmacist what to do. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed one. Monitor your blood pressure: Check your blood pressure as recommended and attend follow-up appointments to assess how well treatment is working. Check for medicine interactions: Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use, including grapefruit or grapefruit juice, which may interact with some Nifedipine products.
