Uses & overview
Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections when prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional. It works by interfering with bacterial protein production, which helps prevent susceptible bacteria from growing and multiplying. Clarithromycin may be prescribed for certain respiratory tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, and other bacterial infections. It is also used in specific combination treatment regimens for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori, which is associated with certain stomach ulcers.
How to use
Take Clarithromycin only as prescribed by your doctor. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the bacterial infection, your age, and your overall health. Take the medicine at approximately the same time each day to maintain consistent levels of the antibiotic in your body. Clarithromycin tablets can generally be taken with or without food. Follow the specific instructions provided with your prescribed formulation. Swallow tablets whole with sufficient water. Do not crush, chew, or split modified-release tablets unless your doctor or pharmacist specifically advises you to do so. If you are using Clarithromycin oral suspension, shake the bottle well before each dose and measure the medicine using the supplied measuring device. Complete the full prescribed course, even if you start feeling better before the treatment is finished. Stopping treatment early may allow the infection to return and can contribute to antibiotic resistance. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take two doses together to compensate for a missed dose. Do not share Clarithromycin with another person, even if they have similar symptoms. Clarithromycin does not treat viral illnesses such as the common cold or influenza. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take because Clarithromycin can interact with certain medicines. Seek medical advice if symptoms become worse, do not improve, or if you develop severe or persistent side effects during treatment. Store the medicine according to the instructions on the packaging and keep it out of reach of children.
