Medicine information
Uses & overview
Eltrombopag Olamine Tablets 50 mg are oral prescription medicines used to manage certain conditions associated with low platelet counts. The active medicine, eltrombopag, belongs to the thrombopoietin receptor agonist class. It works by activating thrombopoietin receptors involved in the production of platelets in the bone marrow. Platelets help the blood clot and control bleeding. In patients with specific blood disorders, platelet production may be reduced or platelets may be destroyed more rapidly than normal. Eltrombopag may help increase platelet counts and reduce the risk of bleeding when prescribed for an appropriate indication. Depending on the approved product information, eltrombopag may be used for persistent or chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), certain cases of severe aplastic anaemia, and thrombocytopenia associated with chronic hepatitis C treatment. Approved uses vary by country and patient group. This medicine is not suitable for every cause of low platelet counts and should only be prescribed by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
How to use
Follow your prescription: Take the prescribed dose at the recommended time. Do not increase or reduce the dose without medical advice, because excessive platelet counts may increase the risk of blood clots. Check the product instructions: Swallow the tablet according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not crush, chew, or split it unless the specific product information permits this. Observe food restrictions: Eltrombopag tablets are generally taken without food or with a meal containing little calcium. Follow the instructions provided with your medicine. Separate calcium and mineral products: Take eltrombopag at least two hours before or four hours after calcium-rich foods, dairy products, antacids, and supplements containing calcium, iron, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, or other polyvalent cations. These substances can reduce medicine absorption. Attend scheduled blood tests: Your specialist will monitor platelet counts and liver function before and during treatment. The dosage may be adjusted according to your results. Report other medicines: Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements you use, as some may interact with eltrombopag. Discuss existing health conditions: Inform your doctor about liver disease, kidney disease, previous blood clots, pregnancy, or breastfeeding before starting treatment. Handle missed doses carefully: Follow the patient leaflet or contact your pharmacist for advice. Do not take an additional dose to compensate for a missed tablet. Do not stop treatment independently: Platelet counts may fall after eltrombopag is discontinued. Your specialist may arrange additional blood tests after stopping treatment. Recognise serious symptoms: Seek urgent medical attention for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, one-sided leg swelling, severe abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Store the medicine safely: Keep tablets in their original packaging and follow the manufacturer's storage instructions. Store them out of children's reach.
