Medicine information
Uses & overview
Lacosamide 50 mg is an oral prescription medicine belonging to the anticonvulsant class. It is used to treat certain types of epileptic seizures, especially focal-onset seizures. Depending on the patient's condition, age, and treatment plan, a doctor may prescribe lacosamide alone or in combination with other antiepileptic medicines. Lacosamide works by enhancing the slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells. This action helps stabilise overactive nerve activity and reduce the abnormal electrical signalling that can contribute to seizures. The appropriate dose and duration of treatment depend on the patient's seizure type, response to therapy, kidney and liver function, and other medicines being taken. Lacosamide 50 mg is a specific tablet strength and should not be substituted for another strength without medical guidance. Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, nausea, sleepiness, double vision, and difficulty with balance or coordination. Lacosamide may also affect the heart's electrical conduction in some patients, particularly those with existing heart conditions or those taking certain heart medicines. Do not stop treatment abruptly, as this may increase seizure frequency.
How to use
Follow your prescription: Take Lacosamide 50 mg exactly as directed by your doctor. The dose and frequency depend on your seizure condition, response to treatment, and medical history. Maintain a regular schedule: Take the medicine at the prescribed times each day to support consistent seizure control. Take with water: Swallow the tablet with water. Do not crush or split it unless your pharmacist confirms that your specific tablet can be divided. Food instructions: Lacosamide can generally be taken with or without food. Follow the instructions provided with your medicine. Missed dose: Take the missed dose when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. If it is nearly time, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose. Do not stop suddenly: Abruptly discontinuing lacosamide may increase seizure frequency. Consult your doctor if treatment needs to be reduced or stopped. Check medicine interactions: Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take, particularly heart medicines and other antiepileptic drugs. Monitor side effects: Report persistent dizziness, fainting, palpitations, double vision, or problems with balance. Attend follow-up appointments: Regular medical reviews help assess seizure control, side effects, and the suitability of your treatment plan.
