Uses & overview
Lacosamide is an antiepileptic medicine prescribed to help control certain types of seizures associated with epilepsy. It works by selectively enhancing the slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels in the brain, helping stabilize overactive nerve cells and reduce abnormal electrical activity that may cause seizures. Depending on the patient's age, diagnosis, and approved product information, Lacosamide may be prescribed for partial-onset seizures, either as a standalone treatment or in combination with other antiepileptic medicines. In certain countries, it is also approved as an additional treatment for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures. The exact approved indications vary according to the product and local prescribing guidelines.
How to use
Follow your prescription: Take Lacosamide in the prescribed dose and at the recommended times. Do not increase or reduce the dose yourself. Take it consistently: Try to take each dose at the same time every day to maintain consistent medicine levels in your body. With or without food: Lacosamide tablets can generally be taken with or without food. Follow the instructions provided with your specific formulation. Swallow tablets appropriately: Swallow tablets with water as directed. If you have difficulty swallowing, ask your pharmacist about an appropriate alternative formulation. Measure liquid medicine carefully: If prescribed an oral solution, use the supplied measuring device rather than a household spoon. If you miss a dose: Follow your patient information leaflet or ask your pharmacist for advice. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Do not stop suddenly: Abrupt discontinuation may increase seizure frequency or trigger serious complications. Your doctor should guide any gradual dose reduction.
