Uses & overview
Povidone Iodine Ointment USP is a topical antiseptic formulated to help reduce the risk of infection in minor cuts, superficial wounds, and minor burns. Povidone iodine works by releasing iodine, which helps destroy various microorganisms on the skin. It is commonly used for skin antisepsis and minor wound care, depending on the product formulation and approved directions. Povidone iodine ointment should be applied only to the areas and conditions specified in its instructions. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other sensitive areas unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional. Do not use it on deep wounds, extensive burns, or large areas of damaged skin without medical advice. Prolonged or repeated use may cause skin irritation or lead to iodine absorption, particularly when applied over large areas. People with thyroid disorders, iodine sensitivity, kidney problems, or those taking lithium should seek medical advice before use. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should also consult a healthcare professional when treatment is needed. For reliable purchasing, compare the product label, pack size, expiry date, and manufacturer information before placing an order through an authorised pharmacy or supplier. Use the ointment as directed and seek medical attention if the wound worsens or shows signs of infection.
How to use
Clean the affected area: Gently clean the minor wound with clean water or as advised by your healthcare professional before applying the ointment. Apply a thin layer: Spread a small amount of ointment over the affected area as directed on the product label. Follow the recommended frequency: Apply the ointment only as often as instructed. Do not use it more frequently or for longer than recommended. Protect the wound if necessary: Cover the treated area with an appropriate sterile dressing if the product instructions or your healthcare professional recommend it. Avoid sensitive areas: Do not allow the ointment to enter your eyes or mouth, and do not swallow it. Use on sensitive areas only when specifically directed. Wash your hands: Clean your hands before and after application, unless your hands are the area being treated. Watch for reactions: Stop using the product and seek medical advice if you develop a rash, significant irritation, swelling, or other signs of an allergic reaction. Seek medical care when needed: Consult a doctor for deep wounds, serious burns, spreading redness, pus, fever, or wounds that are not healing.
