Medicine information
Uses & overview
Deferasirox is an oral iron-chelating medicine used to manage chronic iron overload. Excess iron can accumulate in the body when patients receive repeated blood transfusions or have certain blood disorders that increase iron absorption. If untreated, iron overload may damage organs such as the liver, heart, and endocrine glands. Deferasirox works by binding to excess iron and promoting its removal from the body, primarily through the stool. It may be prescribed for transfusional iron overload in patients with conditions such as thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and other chronic anaemias, depending on the approved indication and individual clinical circumstances. It is also used for selected patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia and documented iron overload.
How to use
Follow the prescribed dose: Take Deferasirox only in the amount recommended by your doctor. Do not increase, reduce, or stop the dose without medical advice. Check your formulation: Deferasirox is available in different formulations, including dispersible tablets and film-coated tablets or granules in some markets. Their administration instructions are not interchangeable, so confirm the exact product prescribed. Follow food instructions: Some formulations must be taken on an empty stomach, while film-coated tablets may be taken with or without a light meal according to product instructions. Follow the leaflet for your specific medicine. Take it consistently: Use the medicine at the recommended time each day to maintain a regular treatment routine. Manage missed doses carefully: Follow the patient leaflet or contact your pharmacist for advice. Never take an extra dose to compensate for a missed dose. Attend regular monitoring appointments: Your doctor may check kidney function, liver function, blood counts, and iron levels before and during treatment. Report warning signs promptly: Seek medical attention for reduced urination, severe abdominal pain, black stools, vomiting blood, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Check other medicines: Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take because interactions may increase the risk of side effects.
