Medicine information
Uses & overview
Cefixime Dispersible Tablets 200 mg contain cefixime, an antibiotic belonging to the third-generation cephalosporin class. It works by interfering with the formation of bacterial cell walls, which are essential for bacterial survival. This action helps treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria when cefixime is considered appropriate by a healthcare professional. Uses and Potential Benefits Doctors may prescribe Cefixime 200 mg for certain bacterial infections, including selected urinary tract infections, middle ear infections, throat infections, and respiratory tract infections. Its suitability depends on the infection site, the bacteria involved, local antibiotic resistance patterns, and the patient’s medical history. This medicine does not treat viral illnesses such as the common cold or influenza. The dispersible formulation is designed to be dispersed in water according to the product instructions, which may make administration easier for some patients. The prescribed dose and duration vary according to age, body weight where relevant, kidney function, infection type, and clinical response. Important Safety Information Possible side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and loose stools. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe skin reaction, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergy to cefixime, cephalosporins, penicillins, or other antibiotics. Take cefixime only when prescribed. Complete the prescribed course unless your healthcare professional advises you otherwise. Do not share antibiotics with others or use leftover tablets, because inappropriate antibiotic use can contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
How to use
Follow your prescription: Take Cefixime Dispersible Tablets 200 mg exactly as prescribed. The dose and duration depend on the infection, your age, kidney function, and your healthcare professional’s assessment. Disperse the tablet correctly: Follow the package leaflet or pharmacist’s instructions for dispersing the tablet in water. Make sure you prepare and take it as directed for your specific product. Follow the recommended schedule: Take each dose at the prescribed time. Cefixime may generally be taken with or without food, but follow your product instructions and your doctor’s advice. Complete the prescribed course: Continue taking the antibiotic for the prescribed duration unless your doctor tells you to stop or change treatment. Do not stop early simply because symptoms improve. Handle missed doses safely: If you miss a dose, follow the leaflet or ask your pharmacist what to do. Do not take two doses together to compensate for a missed dose. Check allergy history: Tell your doctor about previous reactions to cefixime, cephalosporins, penicillins, or other antibiotics before starting treatment. Monitor for side effects: Mild stomach discomfort or diarrhoea may occur. Seek urgent medical attention for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Discuss other medicines: Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you use, especially anticoagulants and other treatments that may interact with cefixime. Store appropriately: Keep the tablets in their original packaging, away from excessive heat and moisture, and out of children’s reach. Follow the storage directions on the label.
