Medicine information
Uses & overview
Bempedoic acid and ezetimibe tablets are prescription medicines designed to help manage elevated cholesterol levels in adults who require additional LDL cholesterol reduction. They combine two active ingredients that work through different mechanisms to support effective cholesterol management. Bempedoic acid inhibits an enzyme called ATP citrate lyase (ACL), which is involved in cholesterol production in the liver. Ezetimibe works by reducing cholesterol absorption in the small intestine. Together, these ingredients help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and may be prescribed to patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or certain other lipid disorders, depending on their medical history and treatment needs. The combination may be used alongside dietary changes and other lipid-lowering medicines when recommended by a healthcare professional.
How to use
1. Follow your doctor's prescription: Take the medicine exactly as prescribed. Your healthcare professional will determine whether this combination is appropriate based on your cholesterol levels, cardiovascular risk, medical history, and other medicines. 2. Take it regularly: The combination is commonly prescribed once daily. Follow your prescribed schedule and try to take the tablet at approximately the same time each day. 3. Swallow with water: Take the tablet with water. Follow the instructions supplied with your specific product, and do not crush or split the tablet unless your pharmacist confirms this is appropriate. 4. Follow food instructions: Bempedoic acid and ezetimibe can generally be taken with or without food. Check the package leaflet for instructions specific to your product. 5. Manage missed doses carefully: If you forget a dose, follow the patient leaflet or ask your pharmacist for advice. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed tablet. 6. Maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle: Follow your doctor's recommendations for a balanced diet, regular exercise, weight management, and other measures that support cholesterol control. 7. Discuss medicine interactions: Tell your healthcare professional about all prescription medicines, supplements, and herbal products. Bempedoic acid can interact with certain statins, while ezetimibe may require additional precautions with some other medicines. 8. Watch for side effects: Report unexplained muscle pain, weakness, joint pain, or swelling. Seek prompt medical advice for sudden tendon pain or swelling, as bempedoic acid may increase the risk of tendon injury. 9. Attend follow-up appointments: Your doctor may monitor cholesterol levels, liver function, and uric acid levels, particularly if you have a history of gout. 10. Continue treatment as directed: High cholesterol often causes no noticeable symptoms. Do not stop taking the medicine simply because you feel well; consult your doctor before making treatment changes.
