Tolvaptan is a prescription medicine used for specific medical conditions involving water balance in the body. It belongs to a group of medicines called vasopressin V2 receptor antagonists. Tolvaptan blocks the action of vasopressin, a hormone that helps the kidneys retain water. This action increases the excretion of free water through urine and can help raise blood sodium levels in selected patients. Depending on the formulation and approved indication, Tolvaptan may be prescribed for certain cases of hyponatremia (low blood sodium) or to slow kidney function decline in eligible adults with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The treatment plan depends on the patient's diagnosis, kidney and liver function, sodium levels, and overall health. Possible side effects include increased thirst, frequent urination, dry mouth, and dehydration. Tolvaptan can also cause serious liver injury in some patients, so liver monitoring may be necessary, particularly during long-term treatment for ADPKD. Treatment for low sodium may require hospital supervision to prevent sodium levels from rising too quickly.
कैसे उपयोग करें
Follow the prescribed dosage: Take only the dose recommended by your doctor. Do not increase, decrease, or stop treatment without medical advice. Take it at the recommended time: Follow your prescription regarding the timing and frequency of doses. Different Tolvaptan treatment regimens may be used for low sodium levels and polycystic kidney disease. Follow fluid intake instructions: Tolvaptan can increase urine production and thirst. Your doctor will explain how much fluid to drink. Do not deliberately restrict water or force excessive fluid intake unless specifically instructed. Take the tablet as directed: Swallow the tablet with water according to the product leaflet. Do not crush or split it unless your pharmacist confirms that this is appropriate for your formulation. Attend regular blood tests: Tolvaptan treatment for hyponatremia may require hospital initiation and close monitoring of blood sodium. Your doctor may also monitor kidney function, hydration, and electrolytes. Monitor liver health: For ADPKD treatment, liver function tests may be required before and during treatment. Report unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes promptly. Manage missed doses carefully: Follow the patient leaflet or ask your pharmacist for advice. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed dose. Inform your doctor about other medicines: Tell your healthcare professional about all medicines and supplements you take because some can interact with Tolvaptan. Recognize dehydration symptoms: Seek medical advice if you develop severe thirst, dizziness, fainting, or inability to drink enough fluids.
