Tamoxifen is a prescription hormonal therapy medicine primarily used to treat hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. It may also be prescribed to reduce the risk of breast cancer developing or returning in selected patients, depending on their individual risk factors and medical assessment. Tamoxifen belongs to the selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) class and works by blocking estrogen's effects in breast tissue. Since some breast cancer cells depend on estrogen to grow, this action can help slow or prevent their growth. The medicine may be used in different treatment settings, including after surgery or other cancer treatments, and sometimes in advanced breast cancer. The appropriate treatment duration depends on the diagnosis, menopausal status, recurrence risk, and recommendations of the treating oncologist.
कैसे उपयोग करें
Follow your prescription: Take the exact dose and frequency recommended by your doctor. Do not increase, decrease, or discontinue the medicine independently. Take it consistently: Tamoxifen is commonly taken once or twice daily, depending on the prescription. Try to take each dose at the same time every day. With or without food: Tamoxifen tablets can generally be taken with or without food. Follow the directions supplied with your specific product. Swallow with water: Take the tablet as directed. Do not crush or split it unless your pharmacist confirms that this is appropriate for your formulation. Handle missed doses carefully: Take a missed dose when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. If it is nearly time, skip the missed dose. Never double your dose. Continue treatment as directed: Hormonal therapy may be prescribed for several years. Do not stop treatment early without discussing the risks and benefits with your oncologist. Review other medicines: Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements, especially certain antidepressants, anticoagulants, and hormonal products, because interactions may affect treatment. Attend follow-up appointments: Regular medical reviews help assess treatment response and identify potential side effects. Report warning signs: Seek urgent medical attention for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, one-sided leg swelling, or sudden weakness. Report unusual vaginal bleeding promptly. Discuss pregnancy prevention: Tamoxifen can harm an unborn baby. Discuss effective nonhormonal contraception and pregnancy planning with your healthcare professional during treatment and for the recommended period afterward.
